CVT Q&A thread

I've recieved several questions regarding the CVT adaptations that are going on.
I decided to start this thread to post a lot of the FAQ .
As well, to use as a general question spot regarding these new projects.
So far there are about 4-6 current CVT projects going on.
So guys, answer any questions people have...

Here is the CVT we are using, and a link to it.

Here is the 25H sprocket we are using, and a link to it.

The mounting of the CVT has been done a few ways, I'll get some info on those as well.
We are running 5/30 sythetic motor oil in the gear box.
So far the best stock set-up for the rollers as they come is to remove 3 of them and shim the conta spring.

My initial testing has shown that there is no loss of speed from just bolting up this CVT with this Sprocket.
Using my same rear sprocket (76T) I am about 2 mph faster than before when I ran 8/76.
And at 8/76 it was a dog off the line.

Here are the threads already in action...
Great information to read on all these threads!
My stretched CVT... link
Robotguys CVT prokect... link
Chevys4Me project thread... link
BIGFTPETEs project... link
Lieutenant Waffles project thread... link
The thread about the roller weights... link

I'll attach more information later.
This just gets us started.

Abe,
You said that the newer CVT you got from Fancy
had a washer behind and in front of the outer Variator pulley.
Is that from the one with the chrome cover, or
the black cover?

The chrome cover does have about a 3/4 " round washer maybe and a 1/16 thick behind the vary nut. At least mine has one to.would lend to a little more stability.

Yes it was a Chrome one that had the washer.
But the other chrome one does not.

I have one black, and two chrome.

You can't sometimes because you need enough of that shaft sticking thru to get the vari outer pulley in the keyed shaft.
I believe the big Vari bushing is trimmed slightly in those CVTs
with the added washer.
Or, the shaft is slightly longer.

Here are a few design's for the bracket.
Take's some elbow grease and some power tools, but these work..

This is Robotguy's side mount bracket:

GearBox Oil

As stated before most of us are running 5/30 synthetic motor oil in the gearbox.
Some of us have sealed the unit, and some have maintained the vent.
Mixed results have been produced.

I found this little device to be perfect for filling the unit:
Found it "Bed, Bath & Beyond"

I just filled a new CVT gearbox, and it took 9 teaspoons.
Then I removed one teaspoon, to allow for some expansion.
Actually, that was all it would allow me to remove before the oil level fell below the syringe holes.

I am currently running my set-up sealed.
I placed an old pinion gear in the vent bolt hole to seal it up.
I did experience some leaking after my first long run, but I've left it to see if it leaks again or if it found a happy medium...?

4-stroke honda w/CVT

I would appreciate any input as to the pro's and con's of running this Honda GX35 motor on a CVT?

I realize it would not be as powerful, but what could one expect?
You could always tune the variator to the motor, right?

Here are some toque and power curves...

I've found that motor for as little as $225 new, but am looking for more info before jumping in...

I think it would be very quick if you tuned the variator right
(heavier weights I think...)

Q: is this whole cvt tranny worth my time for a reeded g43 cruiser motor that rev's about 13k? I already run 8/76 or 7/60 gearing on it and can wheelie it up a hill from a stop with a stock clutch and spring. Getting about 40-45 mph out of it in a pretty short distance.

I'm being serious too, wanna hear from the people who are playing with it and using it the most.

I just rode my Brand new CVT zenoah 51cc
(check my thread ) .I haven't gotten it where i want yet. I have to break it in and all .I also have a ported 51cc with 7/60 gearing . Right now that will clean it's clock ,out of the hole and top it does 45- 47.the problem to your question is we are still working the bugs out and from top end to bottom I think it was worth it to me . This Will cost you 2-3 hundred and time. For something very different.

It's hard to say, because I've never run a more powerful engine with this than
the ported G43l (no reed, but w/pipe) All I know is that the G43l seemed perfect for this mod.
My problem was the horrible low end on my G43, but now it's super awesome. I bet it would improve low/mid power, but it might not give you more top end.
If you do decide to do it,
just balance the pulleys, and replace the bearings for sure.

Allen. try to imagine a two speed on your ped. with a 5/76 first gear. Imagine how quick from a stop it would be. then after you get up to speed the tranny shifts into second gear which can now be geared for better top end cause you have the low end pull you need. A two speed tranny is no joke.

Now try to imagine a CVT is MUCH better than a two speed. It gives you infinite gears in between the first and second. And it goes one step farther. You can tune the cvt which allows the engine to operate at its maximun torque output. So lets say your engine makes 4ft/lbs at 8000rpm, 5ft/lbs at 10,000rpm, and 3ft/lbs at 12000rpm. Obviously the ped excellerates best when it goes through the 9000-11000rpms. What a cvt does is it allows the engine to spin up to that ideal 10,000rpm and stay there while the gearing changes instead of the rpm.

CVT is no joke. They just plain rock. As best said already once you ride a CVT ped you will have no desire to ride a one gear ped again. Its that good.
